Great Sprite Contest 4 - 2004-2005 Dear all, I would like to announce that the GSC4 has been judged and the contest is finally over. It was fun I think if you ignore the fact that some things didn't go as smoothly as we had hoped. The WINNER of the "Bonus Sprites" category is...

Not one but two sprites won the "bonus category", namely the Warbreaker sprite by Egoraptor and the Mace sprite by Nalis. The Warbreaker lost a few point by being larger than what would fit an original Mega Man game. On the other hand it came through with complexity and overall sprite quality. Both sprites are exquisite.

Sprite Name: Talon Grithunder Created by: Seven
The winner of the "special category" by only one point is the Talon Grithunder sprite by Seven. The sprite didn't earn the highest point in overall sprite quality, but it won by sprite complexity and still retaining a form that would fit an original Mega Man sprite. Its size was determined as almost too big and its colors as almost too dark and monotonic, but not enough to loose points over it. A beautiful sprite, without a doubt!

The winner of the "animated category" is the Female Elf Tripple Transformation Assult sprite by the Cold Mage. An impressive display of animation where one sprite morphs into another. The sprite earned high quality to point out the high skill of spriter. Loosing a few points for not being Mega Man-related sprite did not keep this sprite from winning though.

Sprite Name: Bahamut Created by: The Cold Mage
The winner of the "original category" is the Bahamut sprite by the Cold Mage. This exquisite sprite won by one point leaving beautiful sprites, such as the Yojimbo sprite by the Cold Mage, the Mirage Macaw, the Twisted Albatros and the Spike Solrae sprite by Sigfrid, and the Seven sprite by Seven, on second place. All of these sprites were truly a piece of art, but the incredible Bahamut sprite won the day.

Hello. My name is Stefan Karlsson, and I was asked by Michal (Lysekoid) to help out with the judging of this contest. I don't have a nickname really, never cared for one. I've studied with Michal for many years and now I'm working on my PhD specializing in Image Analysis at Halmstad University. I must add though that I can't believe Michal would do something like this contest for you guys. He has a MSc, and two BSc, and could easily go for a PhD if he choose to for crying out loud. He should be working in his field, specializing at medical data analysis and intelligent systems, developing algorithms for machine learning etc, and not wasting time with games or this contest. But then again, Michal has always been a little weird. I'm only helping out with this because Michal has helped me out quite a lot before, but I'm not going to do any exceptions for anyone. I'm going to speak my mind truthfully and objectively whether you'll like it or not. The bonus category; New Horizon. If I understood this correctly then the competitors were asked to create sprites after pictures representing characters from this New Horizon world. Some sprites here were very nice, and some were… less nice. Choosing a few for the finals was pretty easy and so here are the sprites that I believe were worthy to go on.

SEMI-FINALS: Special Sprites
Hi. I call myself Silverwolf and just to let you know I'm not a huge Mega Man fan, however I've played the game and I liked it. Lysekoid asked me to help out with this contest as a favour (I've known Lysekoid for quite some time) and to have him owe me a favour in return is always good business. For a living, I work... I have my own company and I design 3D-graphics. More than this I care not to say about myself. Finally we enter the place where the big boys and girl play. Here we have a few of the best Megaman-spriters throughout the Internet, and choosing a winner is probably nearly impossible. Fortunately for me I don't have to choose a winner, but instead some of the best sprites to go to finals. I mainly concentrated of style, colouring and shading, details, complexity and personality. Leviathan had several pretty great sprites that almost made it to the finals, and I can say the same about Nyloh created by Reaver.0. Unfortunately they were by just a few points by some of the other sprites. Here are my 12 nominees, a little too much maybe but I had a very hard time choosing and figured that these sprites can fight it out in the finals instead.

In this category I studied the following sprites, which believe are worthy of going to the finals: Forte by The Cold Mage, Air Man by Hero, Birdbot, Glyde Loath, Bola and Tron Bonne by Kaitlin, Byte by Nalis, Burn Rooster by Phantos, Command Mission X and Absolute Zero by Robert Oakes, Dark Beastman by Raijin Karate and Crashman.EXE by Surge. All of them were exquisite, but unfortunately not all of them could be nominated. From the four sprites Kaitlin had made I removed Birdbot for being too small and not complex enough to compete with the others. I also removed Bola since it showed less personality than her remaining two excellent sprites. I also removed Hero's Air Man and Surge's Crashman.EXE for being too simple compared to the other competitive sprites. After some second thoughts I also removed Phanto's Burn Rooster even though the colouring of that sprite was truly amazing. It couldn't compete with the style and personality of the Dark Beastman sprite though. The rest of them were absolutely too good for me to even bother picking a winner. The nominees for finals are:
